Hi everyone! So for the past month or so I have been reading the book SYLO by DJ MacHale. I haven't really been able to get a lot of reading done (or writing for that matter) because I was in drivers ed, but I finished my class on Thursday, so today I finally finished SYLO.
A teenager named Tucker lives in a place called Pemberwick, Maine, where many people go on vacation. He is on his high school's football team, enjoys hanging out with his best friend, Quinn, and has a crush on the pretty girl that's visiting named Olivia. However, one day, one of his teammates dies, and no one knows why. Tucker and Quinn go out that night and see something that they probably weren't supposed to see. A few days later, Tucker gets offered a strange crystal called "The Ruby". He doesn't know anything about it, only that it makes him run faster and more aggressive. However, soon another resident dies and the entire island gets put on quarantine. Even a battle team called SYLO comes and stays in the island for a while until they can figure out what is killing all the people. Anyone who tries to escape ends up mysteriously missing or pronounced dead. Soon, Tucker and Quinn figure out what is causing all the deaths, and now they are fugitives. They are on the run and terrified for their own safety.
My favorite character was Quinn because he is not afraid to be himself. He is smart and confident, and doesn't really have many friends besides Tucker, but he doesn't let that stop him from following his dreams. I thought he was funny, sarcastic, and relatable, and I really enjoyed the parts of the book that he was in. During some parts, he also reminded me a lot of some of my friends, which was, of course, nice to see.
SYLO was a fantastic book. I even ordered the sequel to it, STORM, online an hour or two ago. I loved the characters and the idea of the book, and I loved that the reader was put into all the action starting on the first page. One thing I wish is that the characters were introduced a little better. During some parts, I found myself getting confused with who was who. Other than that, I thought that the book had a very new perspective on the life that we know, and what could happen in the future. I also really enjoyed the end (not that I'll give anything away of course). The way it was set up was very nice and I found that it will likely lead very nicely into the sequel. I can't wait to start reading it!
SYLO is a spectacular action book that I recommend to everyone. When I first starting reading, I didn't really know what I was getting into, but I was glad I read it all the way through. I found it intriguing and hard to put down. There was also some humor, and many teenage moments that I thought were really well thought out. Overall, it's a fast paced, exciting story that I can't wait to read more of.
That's all! My next book review will be on Zodiac by Romina Russell, which I am about to begin reading. Bye!
