Hello! So exams are finally over (thank God) and I finished "The Knife of Never Letting Go" by Patrick Ness a few days ago. It's the first book in the Chaos Walking series.
In a world where everyone can read each other’s thoughts in a jumbled mess of words called The Noise, the only remaining child, Todd, is only a month shy of turning thirteen and becoming a man. When Todd leaves on a quest to prove he is ready to become a man, he only has a pocket knife and his dog Manchee for company. However, in a few days, he meets a girl around his age named Viola. All women died as soon as The Noise started to infect the people of Prentisstown, but Viola seems to be perfectly fine. Todd and Viola soon find themselves over their head as they often find that they have to go against some people that Todd considers to be his friends.
My favorite character was Manchee I think. He was, of course, a dog, but he seemed to be very cute. The author did a great job of what a dog would be thinking and saying if it could talk. He constantly repeats Todd's name when he wants his attention and he just seems like a great best friend to Todd, even if Todd doesn't always appreciate him.
This book is probably one of my favorites. It was one of those books where as soon as I finished, I was ordering the other two books in the series. The way that it was written was very original and I found that it was a very easy story to get lost in. The characters are very well written and have a realistic way about them. It feels like you're actually with Todd and experiencing all the same problems that he is. The first time you meet Viola, you feel the same confusion and frustration that he does. I loved the way that the Noise was portrayed. Todd constantly described it as being tangled and giving him a headache, and when you see it written out on paper, that's exactly what it seems like. It's phenomenal.
I would recommend this book to those who are fans of action and adventure books. It also has a touch of dystopian as well. Honestly, if you enjoyed the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, then you would probably enjoy this book. While it is not the same idea, it has the same mood and even some similar character types.
That's really all that's important to know about The Knife of Never Letting Go. Right now, I am reading Storm by DJ Machale (the same person that wrote SYLO). I will do a review on that when I finish it.
Love,
Naiya
