Hello everyone! So I recently finished reading the book Zodiac by Romina Russell. It didn't take me as long to read as I thought it would, even if I didn't read it every day.
The world is divided so everyone lives with their Zodiac sign. For the most part, everyone looks the same, acts the same, and has the same morals. A sixteen year old Cancer named Rho is enjoying life this way. She enjoys hanging out with her best friend, a Sagittarius exchange student named Nishi, and she has a lot of pride in her sign. Until one day, an explosion caused by a secret thirteenth sign causes tragedy in all the Houses. As the only worthy Cancer remaining, Rho finds herself the Guardian of her house, leading them in war, and even talking to some Guardians from different houses, such as the twins from Gemini. Rho is only a teenager, and she is trying to unite the houses to defeat the thirteenth sign, but it's harder than she thought.
My favorite character was probably Rho. She was very relatable (who wouldn't be scared when suddenly you've just become queen?), but also very brave, very strong, and not afraid to fight for what she believed in. Another contender for my favorite character would be one of the Gemini twins, because I am a Gemini and I actually found that I was similar to what they were describing the twins to be like.
I think that Zodiac was a pretty good book. When I saw it in the bookstore, I was actually really excited to read it. It seemed interesting, and it was. It's also part of a series, so during a recent trip to Barnes and Noble, I got the second book. One (minor) thing that I wish I could change was how much romance came into play during this book. It shouldn't have really been surprising from the beginning, but I sometimes felt like the romance chapters distracted from the plot at hand, and I didn't think the characters fit super well together. However, this one thing was not enough to change my opinion: I really enjoyed reading this book and I am very excited to read the next book in the series as well.
I would recommend this book to people who are interested in astrology and horoscopes, as well as those who want a different type of book than what I (and maybe other people) have seen in the past. It's a quicker read than expected and very worth it.
That's everything I needed to cover! Right now I am reading The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, which is the first book in the Chaos Walking series, so I will do a review on that when I finish.
Love,
Naiya
